Each document has several properties defining it. These properties are grouped into three (3): (a) the general properties; (b) the author properties; and (c) the source properties.
Six properties comprise this group: two user-definable properties; and four read-only properties.
This is provided by the author of the document to give it a short introduction. It is in full unicode format. However, this property is locked by default. To unlock it for editing, please obtain author permission.
This is provided by the author of the document to give it a more elaborate description. It is in full unicode format. However, this property is locked by default. To unlock it for editing, please obtain author permission.
The date and time of the computer when the document was first saved is stored here.
The date and time of the computer when the document was last saved is stored here.
The version number of the software application last used by the author in saving the document is stored here.
Indicators of the type of protection of the document which include encryption, password protection of document, and others, are displayed here.
Information about the author and permissions given to modify any information in the document make up this group.
In order to edit the properties in this group, an author password, if previously secured so, is required.
The name of the author is placed here. It should be entered as customarily written by the author. It is in full unicode format.
The company name the author is currently working for. The second line (blanks excluded) and below are considered the address of the company. It is in full unicode format.
The following flags are available to the author in controlling the modification of the document and its data: (a) document read only; (b) thaw derived document; (c) open document with password; and (d) edit general properties.
Documents opened with this flag set is not available for modification of its contents. The contents of the document do not include data found in its Property Sheet.
Documents currently opened and modified when this flag is changed is not covered by the restriction. The change in flag takes effect only when the documents are closed and reopened.
New documents which are created by initially deriving its contents from this document cannot modify any part of the contents copied from this document. Such contents are said to be frozen. It may only be thawed out if this flag is set. Once thawed out, modifications may be allowed again. Freezing of documents is discussed more fully in the appropriate section elsewhere.
If the flag is set, the document cannot be opened until the password is given, if any.
General properties cannot be modified unless this flag is set.
To determine whether or not the document has been derived from another document, and whether the relationship created by the derivation may be broken are some of the domain of this group.
This is the filename (without its path) of the document which the current document has been derived from. An independent document does not have an entry for this and the next property.
This is the path that the source has been located. An independent document leaves this blank.
Contents which may not be modified directly in a derived document may be altered indirectly by modifying its source. Such modifications are not incorporated automatically to all its derived documents. Instead, each derived document is responsible for such synchronization.
The source might have been moved to another location. To be able to perform synchronization, the new location of the source will have to be determined.
A read-only property indicating whether or not the relationship created by the derivation process can be broken. When derived documents break the relationship, it loses the relationship forever, and becomes independent. The same relationship cannot be created either after the creation of an independent document.
There are three ways of thawing: (a) remove source; (b) unfreeze all; and (c) refreeze all.
This method of thawing is the most basic, just removing the source while keeping all currently frozen contents frozen. It may later on be unfrozen and refrozen.
This method of thawing removes the source, if still present, then thaws out all frozen contents. Contents may be refrozen and thawed out as many times at will.
This method of thawing removes the source, if still present, then refreezes all unfrozen contents which may be frozen. Some contents by default or user setting are not affected by this action. Contents may be thawed out and refrozen as many times at will.
